The two-strand twist
Two strands to keep track of, not three.
Every step in the free app links to the technique it uses.

Why it matters
It's the simplest way to give curly and coily hair a style that holds for days, and it's easier than braiding: two strands to keep track of, not three.
How to do it
- Start on damp, detangled hair.
- Take a section and split it into two equal strands.
- Cross the right strand over the left, and keep going all the way down.
- Keep the tension even. Firm enough to hold, never pulling at the root.
- Twirl the end round your finger to finish.
- On straight and wavy hair, twist each strand one way on its own, then wrap them round each other the opposite way, and band the end.
How to check it's right
- The twist looks even from top to bottom.
- It holds when you let go of the end.
Common mistakes
- Uneven strands, which make a lopsided twist.
- Twisting dry hair, which frizzes and unravels.
- Twisting tight at the root to make it last. It won't last longer; it will just pull.

Do this in the app
The page tells you how. The app does four things a page cannot:
- Her hair, not hair in general. Choose Straight, Wavy, Thick, Curly or Coily under "her hair today" and the steps and pictures change to the method for her hair.
- A check before every step. Each step ends with what it should look and feel like, so you know it is right before you move on.
- Fix It, mid-style. When something is not right, "Something's not right" opens the fix for it without leaving the step.
- The diary. Add a photo and a note when you finish, and see what you have done and what to try next.
