The two-strand twist: two strands to keep track of, not three, shown on a model head

Why it matters

It's the simplest way to give curly and coily hair a style that holds for days, and it's easier than plaiting: two strands to keep track of, not three.

How to do it

  1. Start on damp, detangled hair.
  2. Take a section and split it into two equal strands.
  3. Cross the right strand over the left, and keep going all the way down.
  4. Keep the tension even. Firm enough to hold, never pulling at the root.
  5. Twirl the end round your finger to finish.
  6. On straight and wavy hair, twist each strand one way on its own, then wrap them round each other the opposite way, and band the end.
