Detangling curly and coily hair: water and leave-in, not a dry brush, shown on a model head

Why it matters

Curly and coily hair tangles more easily and breaks more easily when it's dry. Brushing it dry is the fastest way to make her dread hair time. Water and leave-in are what make it painless.

How to do it

  1. Mist her hair until it's damp, not dripping.
  2. Smooth a little leave-in through with your fingers. On wash day, do this with conditioner still in.
  3. Divide the hair into four sections and clip three away.
  4. Start at the ends. Fingers first, then the wide-tooth comb, working up a little at a time.
  5. Hold the hair just above any knot, so the pull lands on your hand, not her scalp.
  6. When a section runs freely, twist it loosely out of the way and move to the next.
