Fix It
It won't stay in: falls out within an hour
A few questions, then the thing to do in the next thirty seconds. This is the Fix It tree from the app, written out.
In the app, "Something's not right" opens this mid-style.
What type of style is falling out?
A ponytail or bun
What does the failure look like?
The elastic slips straight down within minutes
Do this
Add one more wrap and a second elastic 3cm below
Fine or smooth hair doesn't grip a single elastic. Wrap it one more time than feels right. It should be firm. Then take a second elastic and wrap it 3cm below the first. Two anchor points hold far better than one through a school day, especially on fine hair.
It holds at first but loosens slowly over the day
Do this
Re-gather with your holding hand closer to the scalp
Gradual loosening means there was slack in the original gathering. Re-gather with your anchor hand held still, right where the elastic will go.
A plait or braid
Where does the failure start?
The end unravels: the bottom falls apart
Do this
Wrap the end elastic at least three times
The end elastic must grip the braid itself, not just the tail below it. Wrap it a minimum of three times, snug against the bottom of the plait. If the hair is fine or the braid is thin, add a small snap clip over the elastic: the clip catches the weave and holds even when the elastic can't.
The whole braid drops or the base loosens
Do this
Start the first 5cm tighter and anchor at the nape
A dropping braid means the first crossovers are too loose. The base is where the structure comes from. Braid more firmly for the first 5cm, then ease off. If it still drops, add a thin elastic at the nape before you start: gather the hair there, secure it, then braid below that point. The nape elastic acts as a fixed anchor.
A clip or pin
Do this
Cross two clips at right angles
A single clip slides out of fine or smooth hair. Insert the first clip in the usual direction. Insert a second clip through the same section at 90 degrees to the first, crossing through it. Each one holds the other in place. This works for both bobby pins and snap clips. The angle is what creates the grip.
Fix It, mid-style, in the app
On a page you have to find your branch. In the app, "Something's not right" is one tap from any step, and it asks the questions. Then:
- Her hair, not hair in general. Choose Straight, Wavy, Thick, Curly or Coily under "her hair today" and the steps and pictures change to the method for her hair.
- A check before every step. Each step ends with what it should look and feel like, so you know it is right before you move on.
- Fix It, mid-style. When something is not right, "Something's not right" opens the fix for it without leaving the step.
- The diary. Add a photo and a note when you finish, and see what you have done and what to try next.
